What Is an AI Agent? (Plain-English Definition)

Definition

AI agent: An AI agent is software that uses a large language model to understand a request or goal, decide what steps to take, and carry them out using tools such as booking systems, databases, email or a CRM, usually with limits and human checkpoints.

In practice

A chatbot answers. An agent answers and acts. Ask an agent “can I move my appointment to Thursday?” and it can check the calendar, find a free slot, rebook you and send a confirmation.

Examples for small businesses

  • A WhatsApp agent that looks up an order in Shopify and replies with tracking.
  • A lead agent that asks qualifying questions, scores the lead and books a call.
  • A back-office agent that reads supplier invoices and creates draft bills for approval.

What makes an agent safe

Good business agents have a narrow scope (a defined list of tasks), limited permissions (they can only touch what they need), human approval for costly or irreversible actions, and logs so you can see what they did.
